Here is my write up during last Commonwealth games(on facebook). The topic is different and out of my domain but from the depth of my heart.

We really feel proud looking at number of medals our sports person are winning at Commonwealth games. But for me, the word “commonwealth’ is hurting, and this feeling is much stronger than the feeling of proud about gold medals.

I don’t know why India is still a member of association of 53 countries which were once governed by Britishers. Are we really free country? We are democratic country governed by elected government, but are we still under influence of British? We as Indian feel proud of following or influenced by western style in our clothing, technology, education etc. These 53 countries includes Australia, Newzealnad, Canada,S.Africa have 30%of world population, and formal head of Commonwealth is still Quin Elizabeth-II. This shows how strong was the small country England was to rule over one third of population of glob. They were smart enough to replace or influence our 5000 year old civilization in just 350 years.
Purpose of this association is not much different than purpose of SARC. Than why should we be part of Commonwealth countries. Commonwealth word itself gives a hard feeling that we r still wealth of British monarchy.

USA was also ruled by British for years. Why they are not part of Commonwealth? I came to know from sources like Wikipedia that states of America fought bloody war to kick Britishers out and that’s why they were not made part of Commonwealth. Whereas in other countries shifting of power was smoother. How funny!! Doesn’t it mean that Britisher made member of Commonwealth to those country that can be handled by them.USA is still a friend nation of UK but not part of commonwealth. USA has become superpower and stronger than Britain, may be because of their independence by all means.

Isn’t it a time again to be super power? If,yes, than small actions like removing “Commonwealth” tag will be a small yet important step.

  3. I agree with your views Ajeet and also to the extent that expressed by Ashish.
However, a common citizen of India needs to first understand the priority of India as a nation which is free from corruption. We have a great heritage and culture which many western civilised countries are willing to adopt, yet we tend to move towards western culture.
As a citizen our priority should be to vote for a right person and not for a right political parties. Removing Commonwealth name is important but not a priority over current situation in India. Even Australia has been thinking to remove name Commonwealth from last many years but haven’t been able to do so as there might be hidden benefits of being in Commonwealth.
India is a developing country and doesn’t even have basic facilities and infrastructure for common people living outside major cities and town. India has been a developing country since independence. Instead of developing basic things, we have developed a culture of corruption which ruins the nation.
I am not saying this because I have chosen to live in Australia these days, but because I am able to see the differences in countries which were in bad shape 70 to 80 years ago. Look at Japan, South Korea, China and many others, where they have reached, what they have achieved in terms of technological advancement etc. Their citizens, wherever they live, do not tolerate any single word against their country. Look at the value of patriotism that citizen have. We Indians try to pull each other and like to see the downfall of others at a cost of Country’s pride. We need to think of how our next generation is going to live in this country.
We have slightly better days after 70 years, thanks to Modi and BJP government, but how far can the old man stretch. Do we have a successor? Can BJP win the next election and continue the development, economy, overall ranking that India is able to achieve in his ruling.
We have lot to worry about common day problems than worrying about us being still under any other monarchy.
    These are only my views.
